(8-Book2 Unit2)Chinese traditional Festivals 中国节

I am an editor of “Limitless Fantasy”, a journal that enjoys global popularity and attracts overseas readers of different nationalities, ranging from teenagers, adults to the retired. Keen on collecting celebrations of traditional festivals from literature works such as novels and poems, I recently have received many letters addressed to me to complain about the phenomenon that some official requests have changed customs.

Traditionally, the Lantern Festival begins with a lantern fair, where people eat rice balls, admire various lanterns and participate in a lantern riddles competition. During the parade that follows, many guys in fancy dress wave to express their joy. Depending on formal requests, it is acceptable to light candles, but it’s not advisable to set off fireworks.

The Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, aims to honour Qu Yuan, a poet who made regular complaint about inequality and gave warnings to the monarch. It was the first traditional Chinese festival added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. In memory of Qu Yuan, citizens make rice dumplings and host dragon boat competitions, which indicate teamwork spirit but are forbidden in some cities for safety .

As the Spring Festival approaches, the whole of China turns a shade of red. All doors are decorated with decorations such as handwritten couplets and the character of fu. On Spring Festival Eve, many families enjoy eating out no less than eating at home. Wherever they eat, they eat dumplings while watching the Spring Festival Gala, whose hosts and hostesses will hold votes and give red envelopes on social softwares to interact with audiences.

In my opinion, where we eat and what we do really doesn’t matter and has nothing to do with the true value of festivals. I have to admit that there exist some loss of tradition and freedom in the process, but we had better embrace the changes to keep these traditional festivals alive for as long as we can.

Mid-Autumn Day is a chance to give thanks for a good harvest, for which everyone is starving. At that time of year, the moon is at its roundest and brightest, making it a token of unity. That's why people in China regard the day as an occasion for reunions and make efforts to gather with their families regardless of distance. They eat mooncakes and other desserts while enjoying the same moon over different roofs.
